Summary

The fiercely-anticipated sequel to the #1 New York Times bestseller Once Upon a Broken Heart, starring Evangeline Fox and the Prince of Hearts on a new journey of magic, mystery, and heartbreak。

Not every love is meant to be。

After Jacks, the Prince of Hearts, betrays her, Evangeline Fox swears she'll never trust him again。 Now that she’s discovered her own magic, Evangeline believes she can use it to restore the chance at happily ever after that Jacks stole away。

But when a new terrifying curse is revealed, Evangeline finds herself entering into a tenuous partnership with the Prince of Hearts again。 Only this time, the rules have changed。 Jacks isn’t the only force Evangeline needs to be wary of。 In fact, he might be the only one she can trust, despite her desire to despise him。

Instead of a love spell wreaking havoc on Evangeline’s life, a murderous spell has been cast。 To break it, Evangeline and Jacks will have to do battle with old friends, new foes, and a magic that plays with heads and hearts。 Evangeline has always trusted her heart, but this time she’s not sure she can。 。 。 。

This audiobook was fantastic! I love this narrator she was perfect!I was so happy to be back in the world with Jacks and Evangeline! Their adventures seem to never end。 And Stephanie Garber has a way of making a world and characters that you never want to leave。 I was so sad when the story ended, especially because it seemed to fly by and all of the sudden I was at the end of the book。 Thank you NetGalley and Macmillan Audio for this audiobook! This is my honest voluntary review

Garber’s creativity continues to impress as it blows my mind how unique this story is。 She built a world that continues to twist and turn and I have no idea how it’s going to end。 It’s built on cursed stories and I am even more intrigued to see where she will go next。 this is a continuation of jacks and Evangeline’s story and it explains so much while still leaving you in the dark。 I need to know what is going to happen next。 There were so many things that happened that moved the story forward b Garber’s creativity continues to impress as it blows my mind how unique this story is。 She built a world that continues to twist and turn and I have no idea how it’s going to end。 It’s built on cursed stories and I am even more intrigued to see where she will go next。 this is a continuation of jacks and Evangeline’s story and it explains so much while still leaving you in the dark。 I need to know what is going to happen next。 There were so many things that happened that moved the story forward but added new mysteries。 I need the next now! So this is not the end of a duology like I thought it was going to be!! Kinda ends on a cliff edge, doesn’t quite leave you hanging。 I really love this storyline。 All the characters, tension, and magic are so immersive。 I sped through this and cannot recommend it enough。 Listened to an ARC audiobook version。 Great narrator。 Only problem, the end of chapter 43 cut off too soon。 Kinda at an important point。 Check content warning。 Special thanks to Netgalley and Macmillan Audio for this audiobook A So this is not the end of a duology like I thought it was going to be!! I need Stephanie Garber to write my wedding vows。 I will never read a book like this again, there simply is no other book that can measure。 I now truly understand what it means to be tongue-tied。 I will never be able to listen to The Archer by Taylor Swift the same way ever again。 Today I pledge that I will get a tattoo inspired by The Ballad of Never After。Big shout-out to my father for randomly picking up the first book in this series in an airport and giving it to me, you have never been more I need Stephanie Garber to write my wedding vows。 I will never read a book like this again, there simply is no other book that can measure。 I now truly understand what it means to be tongue-tied。 I will never be able to listen to The Archer by Taylor Swift the same way ever again。 Today I pledge that I will get a tattoo inspired by The Ballad of Never After。Big shout-out to my father for randomly picking up the first book in this series in an airport and giving it to me, you have never been more spot on。 Evangeline Fox is me written on paper。 She explains the part of me that grew up with fairytales and an extremely twisted view of the world because I wanted to live in a fairytale myself。 Evangeline is for the girls who choose to believe in romance。 。。。more

What an absolutely incredible sequel!I read Once Upon a Broken Heart in the beginning of the year and I have to say, I was conflicted。 There were quite a few things I loved about the story: the magical world building that made me feel as if I was reading a fairytale, the intriguing plot, and, of course, Jacks, who I had already loved so much in the Caraval books and was excited to find out more of。 But, as much as I loved those parts of the story, two important things fell flat for me as i read: What an absolutely incredible sequel!I read Once Upon a Broken Heart in the beginning of the year and I have to say, I was conflicted。 There were quite a few things I loved about the story: the magical world building that made me feel as if I was reading a fairytale, the intriguing plot, and, of course, Jacks, who I had already loved so much in the Caraval books and was excited to find out more of。 But, as much as I loved those parts of the story, two important things fell flat for me as i read: Evangeline, who was so naive it made me incredibly frustrated, and the romance, which in my honest opinion, was pretty much non existent in the first book (like seriously, no development whatsoever, and no chemistry that I could feel)。 Regardless, the fact that the plot and setting were a winner for me made me very intrigued and excited to continue the series and see where the author was taking the story, and I can definitely say I'm glad I decided to give the series a second chance and pick up The Ballad of Never After。 Lets start off with the things I had not liked about the first book, and that were definitely improved in this sequel:Evangeline。 My biggest problem with her in the first book, as I previously mentioned, was how naive she was。 Don't get me wrong, there is nothing wrong with hoping for the best in people and giving them multiple chances to be better。。。 But Evangeline was frustratingly trusting to a point where I wanted to scream as I read the story, because it felt obvious to everyone but her that those people did not have her best interest at heart。。。 and then they betrayed her and she acted so surprised and still gave them more chances time and time again (rinse and repeat, rinse and repeat。。。)。 In this book, this definitely got better。 She still hoped for the best in people, because of course thats just who she is as a person, but she wasn't as trusting as before which for sure made me character more bearable。 I literally liked her character development in this one。 The romance between Jacks and Evangeline was 100x better developed in this book than in Once Upon a Broken Heart, and I finished the story rooting for their happy ending SO HARD。 I definitely shipped them so much in this book。 Their chemistry was written beautifully in this book and every scene between them made me giddy! There are some scenes I will for sure be revisiting time and time again。 The positives from the first book continue to be positives for me after finishing this book。 The world building, like very single other Stephanie Garber book I read, was magical and mysterious and very fairytale-like in the best of ways。 The plot had me on the edge of my seats, and the plot twists in this one were jaw dropping and exciting; I literally had multiple times throughout the story where I was screaming "OH MY GOD" as something new got revealed。 The last 30% of the story specifically had me flipping the pages so fast, wanting to find out where the story was going。 It was just so so good and one of the things Garber does best in her books。 Lastly, Jacks。 Ah Jacks, i already loved him in the first book, i saw his potential in Legendary and knew he could be an incredible main character if given the chance, and The Ballad of Never After just proved that tenfold。 Don't get me wrong, he is a villain in every sense of the word。 Don't go into this story expecting him to be anything but that, otherwise you'll be very disappointed。 He is no hero。 But honestly, I think that's what i love about this character so much。 Stephanie does a great job throughout her books of developing this character further and giving him more and more layers, and what she did with him in this book specifically was beautiful。 We learn such a great deal about his past, there are so many reveals and twists, so much of his actions and personalities are better explained and readers get a better understanding of who he was and came to be throughout the years。 He is definitely the highlight of this series for me, and I am officially so invested in his love story with Evangeline。 Overall, this was such a solid sequel that I did not expect to love as much as I did。 If you were conflicted about book 1, I recommend giving this one a shot。 So good, and I'll be over hearing waiting for the third book now (please???) 。。。more

This is a fantastic addition to the series。 I’m hoping there’s a third book。 Jacks is such a great morally gray character。 And I love seeing the world through Evangeline’s eyes。 It was fun going on all the twist and turns in this adventure。I loved the narrator。 She did a wonderful job with emotions and different voices。 Thank you to NetGalley for the audioARC。 All opinions are my own。

Thank you to Flatiron Books, Macmillan Audio, Macmillan Young Listeners, and Stephanie Garber for the opportunity to read and listen to the audiobook of The Ballad of Never After in exchange for an honest review。I absolutely loved the fairy tale allure of the first novel, Once Upon a Broken Heart, though the one thing that took me out of the story was the addition of vampires。 Unfortunatley, they do play a pretty big part in The Ballad of Never After, but the reader also gets an excellent assort Thank you to Flatiron Books, Macmillan Audio, Macmillan Young Listeners, and Stephanie Garber for the opportunity to read and listen to the audiobook of The Ballad of Never After in exchange for an honest review。I absolutely loved the fairy tale allure of the first novel, Once Upon a Broken Heart, though the one thing that took me out of the story was the addition of vampires。 Unfortunatley, they do play a pretty big part in The Ballad of Never After, but the reader also gets an excellent assortmet of Evangeline, Jacks, the Valory Arch, and some great ties and information about the fable "The Ballad of the Archer and the Fox。"This is the second (and maybe final?) novel in the series and picks up shortly after the ending of the first book。 Evangeline discovers that her husband, Apollo the King, is not dead, but in a suspended life state。 After Evangeline seeks to help restore him, she finds that he seems to be possessed by a curse, he an archer, and she the fox, hunter and hunted, just as in Evangeline's favorite tale。Jacks continues to be an aloof wild card。 He seeks the Valory Arch for reasons unknown (reasons which are revealed at the end of the book) and Evangeline is still disinclined to help。 But strangely enough, she also seems to find an attraction to him。 There are stones that Evangeline and Jacks need to open the Arch, and they make the people around them feel and act a certain way, depending on which stone it is。Evangeline finds she truly wants to save Apollo and keep Jacks close, whether as a friend or something more。 There is also a new king in Apollo's place (for now), that is revealed early on and a bit of a frustrating surprise。 There also might be another key to the Valory Arch, in which circumstance, would Evangeline's usefullness to Jacks come to an end?Like the first book, there are aspects of this book that do feel a bit all over the place, though the ending does have a decent resolution that might just bring a tear to the eye。 I appreciate that this is a solid ending for a duology, though there is certainly potential if Garber wanted to continue the story。 I don't believe there will be more, but writers do what they do。 This is an enjoyable read with a fairy tale vibe that readers will devour in one sitting。 。。。more

OH MY GOODNESS!I truly am a fan of Stephanie Garber’s books - I cannot deny that。 This book has brought my love of her storytelling to a whole new level。 Her imagination is incredible and she is really good at immersing the reader in the world she has created。 The descriptions make you feel like you are there。 Each and every one of her characters is wonderful。 You even love the bad guys。 Evangeline has grown so much from the first book。 And Jacks… If you loved him before, you will love him even OH MY GOODNESS!I truly am a fan of Stephanie Garber’s books - I cannot deny that。 This book has brought my love of her storytelling to a whole new level。 Her imagination is incredible and she is really good at immersing the reader in the world she has created。 The descriptions make you feel like you are there。 Each and every one of her characters is wonderful。 You even love the bad guys。 Evangeline has grown so much from the first book。 And Jacks… If you loved him before, you will love him even more while reading this book。Towards the end I thought this series was going to be a duology。 It really felt like it could come to a nice a tidy conclusion, but then Garber ripped up a shredded the very fabric of what I thought would be reality。 That cliffhanger!
